How it Works

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.” - Romans 12:2

As a self proclaimed Youtube bike mechanic, I spend much of my time watching and learning from a man named Calvin Jones. Calvin has been working on bikes for over 30 years and made it his life’s mission to teach others about how to work on bikes. As I watched his tutorial videos I noticed something different about the way he taught, and Calvin summed it up perfectly by saying this,

“The purpose of the teacher is to bring the subject to life. I am not up there reading you this script and telling you exactly what to do. That’s not the point. I want people to understand HOW IT WORKS. If you understand how something works, you can prepare your own repair adventure.”

Calvin knew the age-old principle, “give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.” If we only know WHAT to do, but have no idea WHY we do it, we’ll never fully understand how bikes work. This is so relevant for our faith as well!

Many of us go through life just looking for a Bible verse, a podcast, or a pastor to tell us exactly what to do. We’ll follow directions well, but will never understand the fullness of walking life by the Spirit. God’s will is that we would rely on Him, walk with Him, and understand how He has uniquely called us to something! This requires the daily renewing of our minds. As we renew our minds regularly, we slowly begin to understand HOW faith in Jesus works, rather than only knowing WHAT faith in Jesus looks like. Let’s commit to knowing the HOW.
