Hubbard Brook Tour

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” - Romans 1:20

One of my favorite places to encounter truth about God and the world He created is in nature. On May 17th, Mtn Ministry will be offering a guided tour of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study, led by Geoff Wilson, who has dedicated much of his career as an ecologist to Hubbard Brook. This opportunity grew out of a friendship with Geoff that has developed over the past decade. Over that time, many of our conversations have circled around something we both care deeply about: the ongoing disconnect between the scientific community and communities of faith.

From his side, Geoff has been frustrated by how often scientists struggle to engage religious people in a respectful and meaningful way. From my side as a Christian, I’ve wrestled with how the stereotype of Christians dismissing science or not caring for creation isn’t just a stereotype in every case—sometimes it is reflected in real attitudes and behaviors. That’s hard to ignore, even if it doesn’t represent all Christians. At the same time, that’s not the whole story. There are many scientists who care deeply about spiritual questions, and many people of faith who care deeply about creation and are eager to learn.

Hubbard Brook is one of the most important long-term ecological research sites in the world, where decades of careful study reveal the complexity and interconnectedness of God’s creation. As Christians, we believe all truth is God’s truth. When science is done with humility, it often deepens our sense of wonder and points us back to the order and intelligence of the Creator. Scripture also calls us to steward and care for the world God has entrusted to us.

Our hope is that this tour helps build a bridge between faith and science, between assumptions and understanding, and between people who care deeply about truth but don’t always know how to talk with one another well. Please join us on May 17th at 3pm!
