Jesus Never Changes

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" - Hebrews 13:8

As one year closes and another begins, we often find ourselves in reflection. We recall the past year and we think about what we've done, what we didn't do, our failures, our success, who we are and who we'd like to be. Some set new year goals; others forego the act of doing so in spite of never reaching those goals in previous years. It is also not uncommon for people to do nothing of either sorts. For many, deep reflection can bring one to feel very overwhelmed in their unmet expectations and/or unmet goals.

I'm not sure which boat you have found yourself in this January, and I am not going to write about which goals you should be setting. But I am here to bring some encouragement from the Word of God. Your weight loss goal will only bring temporary satisfaction. The raise you've been working for and have received will eventually leave you wanting more again, or less. Your kids will disappoint you, and your spouse too. You will disappoint them in return. Your plans, they probably won't go as planned. There WILL be hurt, heartbreak, and tragedy this next year.

Sounds pretty glum, right? But here comes the good part. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8). Whether the world seems to crumble around you this year, or this is the year where everything seems to go your way, you need this truth. God has not changed, nor will He. His presence, power and love remains for eternity. You know what this truth also means? When your life is in shambles, God is with you and He will not forsake you. You are not alone, by His grace you stand. When your life is on the pedestal, God is with you and He will not forsake you. You are not alone, by His grace you stand.

Whether you're the goal-setter or the goal-forgoer - keep this truth in mind. In every fleeting day, hour, minute, second - God has not changed. Take this verse, Hebrews 13:8, scribble it on a notecard and place it somewhere you'll see. Maybe on your bathroom mirror or the bedside table. "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever" (Hebrews 13:8).
