Where is Your Faith?

“Then he asked them, ‘Where is your faith?’ The disciples were terrified and amazed. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked each other. ‘When he gives a command, even the wind and waves obey him!’” - Luke 8:25

If you find yourself exploring alone in the White Mountains, you might begin to wonder this question: "If I get hurt or lost out here, will I be able to get help?" The wilderness can be a very dangerous place. Taking a wrong turn, making a wrong step, or getting caught in a storm can put you in a very scary situation. But if you're an outdoorsman or an explorer you understand the risks and you seek to move forward. You trust that you've done the research and that the risk is worth the reward.

In Luke 8, Jesus is exploring on a boat with his students on a mission to share about the Kingdom of God. He was on a boat with many experienced fishermen who were very familiar with this lake. Suddenly, the unexpected happens. A storm rolls in that shakes fear even into these experienced men and they begin to lose hope. "Master, Master, we're going to drown!" Jesus then rises up and calms the storm. He looks at the men and says, "Where is your faith?"

Jesus never promised that we would go through life without any trouble, but rather that He would give us comfort in every moment. We don't know exactly what their faith was in during that moment, but it wasn't in Jesus. Maybe it was in their control over the situation. Maybe it was in the comfort of a peaceful boat ride. Wherever you find your hope right now, I'd encourage you and I to redirect it to Jesus. And the next time we wander through the mountains and something goes wrong, we can stay comforted by God's presence.
