His Love

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, no powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” - Romans 8:37-39

I recently listened to a podcast interview with a public figure who has recently become a new father. The host asked him, “What is your greatest hope for your little boy?” The man, who has lived through a lot of family trauma, replied with tears in his eyes. “I don’t ever, ever, ever, ever, ever want him to ever question how much I love him. I don’t ever want him to ever feel like he doesn’t have a safe place to go, regardless of what he’s done.” He went on to say that even if his child did something unspeakable one day, like killed another person, he still would never want him to doubt his father’s love, even while weathering the consequences of his actions.

At first, these words took me off guard, because rarely do we humans think about our children doing horrible things. But then the Christlikeness of that statement hit me hard. Isn’t this exactly how God feels toward us? Listening to the emotion in this man’s voice as he spoke, I realized how God must feel when we continue to doubt His love and push it aside due to guilt or shame.

Romans 8:37-39 brings us this life changing truth. “In all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, no powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
