In His Word

I recently finished reading the book of 2 Kings and the final chapters were the most profound to me. In particular, when Josiah becomes king in chapter 22. Did you know, even though there were some "good" kings throughout the book of 2 Kings, Josiah was the ONLY one to remove the high places? Others removed things pertaining to Baal worship and such, but they all failed to remove the high places.

Why was Josiah the only one to do this? When I thought back through the kings I realized something - I didn't recall any accounts of those "good" kings being in God's Word. Mostly, they ended up being "good" because they had good influences around them. But to know God and obey Him requires so much more! It requires personally seeking Him in His Word to know His will!

In 2 Kings 22 when Hilkiah finds the Book of the Law in the temple and shares it with Josiah, the king is immediately cut to his heart. He even tears his clothes as he comes to grip with how all of Israel had sinned (v. 11-13). That is what God's Word does. It teaches us, rebukes us, trains us in all righteousness (2 Timothy 3:16).

A relationship with God is not developed just by what we hear from others or going to church on Sundays. We cannot know who He is or how to truly obey Him without personally getting in His Word. We may come close like those "good" kings, but we will fail to remove the high places. Friends, get in His Word today and make it a habit. In His Word you will grow in your relationship with Him, I assure you. If you're struggling with understanding it, do reach out to someone you know who can help. Just as the kings who were "good" had good company, so it will also benefit you. Pray for understanding of His Word, God desires for us to know Him and He is faithful to answer everything according to His will.
