Jesus is Best
“And a man lame from birth was being carried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple that is called the Beautiful Gate to ask alms of those entering the temple. Seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple, he asked to receive alms. And Peter directed his gaze at him, as did John, and said, “Look at us.” And he fixed his attention on them, expecting to receive something from them. But Peter said, “I have no silver and gold, but what I do have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk!” And he took him by the right hand and raised him up, and immediately his feet and ankles were made strong.”
Acts 3:2-7 ESV
Can you imagine? Being lame your whole life and suddenly walking? An indescribable feeling I’m sure the lame man would’ve said if you’d been there to ask.
There he was, begging for money, only to receive something much greater from God. The man was begging because his inability to walk also left him with an ability to work. Begging was his way to eat, his way to survive. Then Peter and John come along and in Jesus’ name they heal him completely!
How often is this a metaphor for our lives? We think we know what we need. But God has something much better for us! In fact, not just something better for us, what IS best for us. Peter didn’t give money to the man so he could eat once, he healed him so he could make a living and eat every day! Peter doesn’t stop there, he goes on to preach the Gospel to the man and everyone around who witnessed the miracle.
Our greater need is always spiritual. God is not concerned with the things we often are. In fact, He says not to worry about earthly things, like what we will eat or drink or wear (Matthew 6). God is most concerned about the eternal.
What is the condition of your soul? Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior? God is willing and wanting to save all who would confess and put their faith in Him. Come to Jesus, He is not the better thing God has for you, He is the BEST thing.
