Overcoming Unbelief

I once heard someone say, "Everyone is an unbeliever". At first I didn't quite understand what he meant and quite honestly it made me feel a little uncomfortable but after thinking about it I couldn't agree more. Let me explain…

There is a story in Mark 9 where a Father brings his demon-possessed son to be healed by Jesus. After explaining his son’s condition he said, "if you can do anything, take pity on us and save us". Jesus responds to his doubtful plea by saying "If you can? Everything is possible for him who believes".

I bet you (like myself) have experienced unbelief like the father in this story. I've often asked God to change an area of my heart, but wondered if I will find true healing in Him or if I should be looking somewhere else. The reality is that all sin is a matter of belief in who God is and what he has done. When we choose sin we believe that God is keeping true satisfaction, happiness or goodness from us because we choose our own path instead of His. At that moment we are unbelievers.

The beauty of the work of Christ is that even when our faith is small his grace is enough. After Jesus' reminder, "immediately the boys father exclaimed, 'I do believe, help me overcome my unbelief!" The boy’s father confessed his struggle to believe in the person and work of Jesus and asked for healing of his ongoing unbelief! The gospel of Jesus is not just something that we were saved and changed by, it’s something that we are continually being saved and changed by even after we accept it! If you are struggling with unbelief, don't think for one second that you are alone. Call out to God and ask him to help you overcome your unbelief. It is through faith in the person and work of Jesus that genuine healing occurs.
