The Importance of Patience in Our Decisions
“Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” – James 1:19 (ESV)
In our fast-paced world, it’s all too easy to react hastily. Our emotions can lead us to make decisions without fully considering the consequences. I remember a time when my children were young, and I found myself caught in the whirlwind of parenting. One particularly chaotic day, my kids were bickering in the grocery store which continued on in the car; feeling embarrassed and overwhelmed, I declared that they could not go to the playground or watch the movie they had been looking forward to later. It felt like the right thing to do in that moment—a way to assert control and teach them a lesson.
However, when the time came to enforce my decision, I felt a wave of regret wash over me. The playground loomed large as a missed opportunity for my children to expend their energy—and the movie I used as a babysitter while cooking dinner, left me with no peace. Suddenly, my hasty punishment transformed into a burden that impacted the entire evening. The lesson I intended to teach turned into an unnecessary consequence that affected us all, including more mischief and bickering.
This experience serves as a poignant reminder of the wisdom found in James 1:19. The verse encourages us to be “quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” It calls us to pause, reflect, and consider the greater picture before we act. In moments of heightened emotion, especially as parents, we can easily react without thinking, only to later regret our decisions. We do this with family, friends, and coworkers, too.
Patience is not just a virtue; it is a powerful tool in decision-making. It allows us to respond thoughtfully, aligning our actions with our intentions and values. Instead of reacting in anger or frustration, we can take a moment to breathe and consider the best course of action that fosters understanding and love.
As we navigate our roles as parents, friends, or leaders, let us strive to embody this principle. Commit to responding with love and wisdom rather than hastily reacting to difficult situations. The next time you feel the urge to make a swift decision, pause and consider: What are the long-term effects of this choice? How can I respond with grace?

Heavenly Father, thank You for the wisdom in Your Word. Help us to be quick to listen and slow to react, especially in challenging moments.
