The Power of Repetition in His Word
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom...” — Colossians 3:16 (ESV)
Are there beloved novels you know by heart—like The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, or Lord of the Rings? Can you recite quotes and analyze characters? Many readers find these stories impactful because they immerse themselves in them repeatedly.
This raises an insightful question: if repeated readings of our favorite series deepen our understanding, why would the Bible be any different? Instead of viewing it as overwhelming, consider this: a standard ESV Thinline Bible has about 1,120 pages. The ESV Reader’s Bible is only 3,364 pages—shorter than many popular series! This was my "aha" moment this week, as I gave up social media, trying to choose God's Word over my phone. He had me reading Colossians 3:16 every day of my, now, 10 days of fasting from social media.
Imagine the transformation that could happen if you engaged with the Bible as intensely as you have with those cherished stories. Your understanding would deepen, and you would cultivate a love for God and His Word.
There’s no need for complicated methods or extensive notes. Instead, learn some basics of understanding Scripture and start reading! The key is to let God's Word dwell in you richly. This approach is accessible to us all and has incredible potential for change.
I challenge you to embark on this journey, to dwell in the Bible, and may you discover the treasures within His Word and experience its life-changing impact.
Dear Lord, help us to approach Your Word with eagerness. May we read it with the same passion we have for our favorite stories, allowing it to transform our lives. Amen.
