Gears of Discipleship
"Remember those who led you, who spoke the word of God to you; and considering the result of their conduct, imitate their faith." Hebrews 13:7
"Iron sharpens iron, So one man sharpens another." Proverbs 27:17
Very close to the core of living in Christian community is the need for spiritual mentoring and discipleship. I think the stages of spiritual growth and maturity are similar to the gears of a car. We all need to be in a consistent community with others who require us to operate in different gears than we're used to, whether lower or higher than our own. Relationships, even healthy ones, are messy. Sometimes they require us to downshift, slow down and come alongside someone in their place of need. Other times, healthy relationships challenge us to hit the gas and throw it into overdrive. That challenge looks different for each one of us, but the truth remains the same. Life is not meant to be lived alone! If you don't already have these relationships in your life, I would encourage you to find someone to mentor and disciple, as well as someone who can do those things for you! With a little effort, intentionality and a whole lot of help from the Holy Spirit, you will find yourselves growing closer to one another and closer to Christ.
