Rejoicing in His Sufficiency

All of Gods creation reflects who He is.

Those words came to mind as I took in the scenery of changing leaves and the cool breeze against my cheeks. It would almost be peak foliage, I thought to myself.

How beautiful are the autumn colors! The reds, yellows, and oranges! And why do the leaves fall? A quick google search will tell you it’s because they aren’t doing their job of photosynthesis anymore, so the tree “pushes” them off. It is the leaf’s lack to ability to perform that we find most beautiful. How strange indeed!

Soon all those leaves will be piled and raked together by those below. Perhaps they will be jumped into by children giggling and running in the yard.

But let us come back again to how they got there, the beauty we awe over and strangers from all over gather to see is caused by the leaf’s lack of ability to perform!

For those of us who follow Christ, our lack of ability to perform should also lead us to awe. Not because we change colors, but rather because that reminds us of how great a Savior we have! Our insufficiencies are made enough by His sufficiency. Our failures, able to be redeemed by His great mercy and grace. Our sins, removed as far as the east is from the west by His blood shed.

As we see our lack of ability to perform more and more clearly, this should not lead us to more guilt or more shame. Rather it should lead us to more rejoicing and more worship.

One of my favorite authors, Jennie Allen, wrote “We don’t confess so that God will forgive; we confess to remember and enjoy that we already are forgiven. Jesus has handled this problem fully and completely and replaced our sin with His goodness.”

So when you look at the leaves, those insufficient leaves, I pray it would remind you of Christ’s sufficiency on our behalf.
