Letting Go of Resentment

"To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do.”

Job 5:2 (GNT)

Holding onto resentment only harms you more than anyone else. It’s self-destructive and unproductive. Resentment makes no sense.

Consider Job. A once-wealthy man who had everything—prosperity, fame, and a loving family—he lost it all in a heartbeat. Enemy nations decimated his livestock, a storm tragically took his children, and he was afflicted by a terrible disease. The only person left by his side was his wife, who, in his darkest hour, urged him to “curse God and die” (Job 2:9 GNT).

Then came his friends, suggesting it was all his fault. But amidst their misguided advice, one friend shared vital wisdom, reminding Job, “To worry yourself to death with resentment would be a foolish, senseless thing to do” (Job 5:2 GNT).

His friend's insight was profound; in times of great heartache, harboring resentment won’t solve anything. It only exacerbates pain. Reflect on your own life. Have you ever said or done something regrettable because of resentment? Perhaps you thought, “I’ll get back at them!” only to act foolishly.

Resentment leads you to self-destructive choices, causing you to suffer far more than those you resent. It breeds misery and rarely brings about the resolution you seek.

So why cling to resentment any longer? Let go today. Choose forgiveness, and embrace the freedom that comes with it. Release the burden of grudges and experience the peace that forgiveness can bring into your life.

Dear Lord, help us to release any resentment we hold in our hearts and grant us the strength to forgive those who have wronged us. May we find peace and freedom in Your love as we let go of our burdens and embrace healing.
